Road of Hope: Riding Across Madagascar with Francesca Gasperi and Maurizio Gerini

Some journeys are measured in miles.

Others are measured by the people you meet, the stories you hear, and the emotions you bring home.

For Francesca Gasperi and Maurizio Gerini, Madagascar is exactly that. A place that captured their hearts so deeply that they returned once again—not just for another motorcycle adventure, but to continue a project born from the desire to help those living in a reality far different from our own.

A journey with a purpose

Everything began with Father Floriano, an Italian missionary who has dedicated more than 65 years of his life to supporting local communities in Madagascar.

From this connection, Road of Hope was born—a project that raises funds and awareness to support his mission and the people he serves.

In 2023, Francesca and Maurizio rode all the way from Imperia, Italy, to Madagascar, crossing Africa entirely overland on their motorcycles. It was a two-month journey that left a lasting impact and inspired them to return.

Ten days of true adventure riding

This latest expedition began with six friends, all riding 450cc enduro motorcycles.

Starting from Antananarivo, the group crossed rice fields, mountain trails, remote villages, technical tracks, and countless river crossings, many made even more challenging by the recent rainy season.

Heading south, the landscape transformed completely. The lush scenery gave way to Madagascar’s iconic baobab trees before reaching the stunning white dunes overlooking the turquoise waters near Toliara.

For many riders, that would have marked the end of the journey.

For Francesca and Maurizio, it was only the beginning of what truly mattered.

Where the ride ends and Road of Hope begins

After completing the adventure ride, they travelled inland once again to meet Father Floriano and continue the work they had started during their previous visit.

This is where the journey takes on a deeper meaning.

It is no longer just about challenging trails or reaching remote places. It becomes about sharing everyday life with local communities, listening to their stories, and contributing in a tangible way to the mission’s projects.

As they describe it: “More than one specific moment, it was the human side of the journey that deeply touched us. Every encounter, every village we reached, and every smile we received along the way left us with something truly valuable.”

When technical gear really makes a difference

Travelling through Madagascar means facing constantly changing conditions.

Within a single day, riders experience intense heat, tropical humidity, sudden rainstorms, and long hours in the saddle.
To handle these demanding conditions, Francesca and Maurizio relied on several SIXS products.

The new Light BT V2 collection delivered exceptional breathability and moisture management, even under protective riding gear during the hottest days.

The TS1 4-Season baselayer provided consistent comfort throughout changing temperatures, helping keep the body dry and comfortable from morning to evening.

Resolvwear, the detergent specifically designed for SIXS technical garments, also proved to be an invaluable companion throughout the journey. After each evening wash, the clothing was fresh again and ready to take on another day of adventure.

Madagascar changes you

What Francesca and Maurizio brought home was far more than incredible photos or unforgettable riding memories.

What stayed with them most was the extraordinary humanity of the people they met.

“Madagascar has a way of bringing you back to what truly matters. It pushes you beyond your comfort zone, confronting you with challenges, simplicity, and realities that are often very different from our own. Yet it also shows you how powerful a smile, generosity, and human connection can be, even when people have very little.”

That is the true meaning of Road of Hope.

A project that continues to grow, journey after journey.

And this October, Francesca Gasperi and Maurizio Gerini will once again set off for Madagascar.

We are proud to ride alongside them, every mile of the way.
